Australian Varieties
Cascade
Tasmanian grown Cascade has been propagated from Cascade plants imported from the USA by Hop Products Australia and is very similar to the US grown Cascade variety. It is characterized by a dark green elongated cone which contains low amounts of alpha acids. The aroma is of medium strength and very distinct.
Cluster
The Australian grown hop variety Cluster is a medium alpha acid variety grown by Hop Products Australia in small quantities. The Alpha acid content is medium, aroma is strong and storage stability of the alpha acids is among the best in the world.
Galaxy
Galaxy is one of the most exciting new hop cultivars developed to date. When used as a late addition for flavour or aroma it contributes a distinctive clean citrus and passionfruit character which is more striking and intense the later the addition.
Millennium
The Australian grown hop Millennium is a high alpha triploid cultivar bred by Barth Haas group member John I Haas’ breeding programme in the USA. Millennium was released for commercial production in 2000.
Pride of Ringwood
The Australian hop variety Pride of Ringwood is a high alpha cultivar. It has been commercially grown since the 1960’s and is widely used in Australia and around the world. Pride of Ringwood is a very well regarded high alpha Australian bred bitter variety with pleasant hop aroma.
Southern Hallertau
Southern Hallertau is a fine aroma hop developed in Australia from the famous German cultivar Hallertau Mittelfrueh. Southern Hallertau was selected for it's organoleptic similarity to Hallertau Mittelfrueh.
Stella
Stella is a new aroma variety which contributes hoppy and floral notes, with subtle hints of anise and a satisfying fullness of palate. Stella is reminiscent of, yet distinctly different in character to noble European varieties, and provides a contrast to the citrus and tropical fruit characters of many modern hops.
Southern Saaz
Southern Saaz is a fine aroma hop developed in Australia as a seedless alternative to the famous Saazer cultivar. The flavour imparted to beer by Southern Saaz is very close in character to Saazer.
Summer
Summer is a unique seedless aroma hop developed and grown in Australia. Summer provides distinctive light apricot and melon fruit notes nicely balanced by a background hop character which can be used to great effect in many beer styles.
Super Pride
The Australian hop variety Super Pride is a seedless high alpha acid variety, bred by the Hop Products Australia Rostrevor breeding programme. Bred from the famous Pride of Ringwood – Australia’s dominant hop variety since the 1960’s – Super Pride features similar mild aromas and low Cohumulone levels. Super Pride has higher alpha acid than its mother Pride of Ringwood.
Topaz
Topaz was originally selected as a seedless high alpha-acid hop for the production of extract, but recent work has shown it to have excellent flavour potential, to the point that a beer hopped solely with Topaz was the most preferred of a group of five single hop beers by tasters at Brau 2010.
Willamette
The Australian grown hop variety Willamette is a seedless aroma variety grown by Hop Products Australia since 1988. Willamette has Fuggle type aroma qualities. It is known for its aromatic properties and moderate bittering. It has been used as a replacement for Fuggle hops. It is characterised by moderate alpha acids (moderately bittering) and aroma qualities.
