Our most versatile lady matures late, but more time on the bine results in striking citrus and passionfruit flavours that are worth the wait.
Galaxy™ can be used in almost any style of beer. Her fruity aroma is tempered depending on the different hops, malt and yeast in the brew, but late addition will always have a distinctly flavoursome effect.
When used late in the kettle, the whirlpool, or for dry hopping, Galaxy™ contributes a striking flavour best described as a combination of passionfruit and citrus. The fruit characters are modulated by different hops, malts, yeasts and dosing, however a late addition of Galaxy™ into the brew is always distinct.
In the mid-1990s Australian high alpha hops were crossed with male hops bred from European cultivars, with the aim of creating new Australian high alpha acid varieties which displayed some of the European traits. Initial work focused on the use of males bred from well-known German variety Perle.
The seedlings were grown and evaluated for nine years before Galaxy™ was ready for her debut and a sample was provided to brewers for assessment. Her strong passionfruit, peach and citrus characters were immediately evident in trial brews and in 2009 HPA grew the first commercial crop with a yield of just 6,500 kg.
