Shambles began when Cornel Ianculovici, a former teacher had a “beer-life-crisis” and decided to ditch the classroom to turn his homebrewing hobby into a career. Cornel and his brew mate Shane had been homebrewing in the garage for more than a decade, with their garage brewery growing into a full-blown multi-vessel stainless steel pilot brewery, reminiscent of a miniature commercial brewery.
In 2015, Cornel decided he wanted to build a proper brewery and make beer for a living. He took over a former butcher in the heart of Hobart, that was full of forgotten machinery, cars, old electrical equipment. It was a real shambles – hence the name.
Shambles’ taproom is complete with a sun-drenched beer garden out the front where you can watch the world go by, and a huge beer hall out the back where you can enjoy a game of table tennis or two. Plus, their kitchen serves extremely tasty modern pub food, and they also host trivia on Thursdays.
It’s hard to recommend just one beer from Shambles, they’re all good and most of them feature our Aussie hops. But their Session IPA featuring Vic Secret or their Porter crammed full of Ella and Cascade are particularly enjoyable.
